Seit vielen hunderttausend Jahren erfährt der Mensch die Veränderungen in seiner Umgebung: Tag und Nacht in kurzer Folge. Und der Ablauf von Witterung und Jahreszeiten in längerer Folge.	For hundreds of thousands of years, humans have experienced changes in their environment: Day and night in quick succession. And the progression of weather and seasons in a longer sequence.
Diese Beobachtungen waren für Ackerbau und Viehzucht, also die Ernährung, lebenswichtig. Aus der erkannten Wiederholung der Witterungen entstand der Begriff: das Jahr.	These observations were vital for agriculture and livestock breeding, i.e. nutrition. The concept emerged from the recognized repetition of the weather: the year.
Lange war man der Ansicht, die Sonne dreht sich um die Erde. Das war das geozentrische Weltbild.	For a long time it was believed that the sun revolved around the earth. That was the geocentric world view.
Aber schon im Persien und im Griechenland der Antike, also vor über 2.000 Jahren, kamen manche Astronomen zu einer anderen Ansicht. Die sagten, die Erde dreht sich um die Sonne. Das ist das heliozentrische Weltbild.	But as early as ancient Persia and Greece, over 2,000 years ago, some astronomers came to a different view. They said the earth revolves around the sun. This is the heliocentric world view.
Vor 500 Jahren bewiesen Wissenschaftler mit ihre Berechnungen, daß die Erde um die Sonne kreist und nicht umgekehrt. (Galilei, Kopernikus)	500 years ago, scientists proved with their calculations that the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around. (Galileo, Copernicus)
Die Bahn der Erde um die Sonne sah man als Kreis oder Ellipse an. Der Kreis und die Ellipse sind in sich geschlossen. Man kann einer solchen Bahn endlos folgen.	The earth's orbit around the sun was seen as a circle or ellipse. The circle and the ellipse are self-contained. You can follow such a path endlessly.
Sie haben aber einen endlichen Umfang. Auf einer Kreisbahn kann man beliebig jeden Punkt zum Anfang, zum Jahresbeginn erklären. Also suchte man nach einem besonderen Punkt.	But they have a finite scope. On a circular path you can declare any point as the beginning, the beginning of the year. So they looked for special points.
Ein solcher Punkt ist, wenn die Zeit des Tages und die Zeit der Nacht gleich lange ist. Die Tag– und Nachtgleiche gibt es zwei Mal im Jahr.	One such point is when the time of day and the time of night are equal. The equinox occurs twice a year.
Man orientierte sich an dem Punkt, als der Tag, die helle Zeit, länger wird als die Nacht, die dunkle Zeit, zwischen zwei Höchstständen der Sonne (der Mittag).	The focus was on the point when the day, the bright time, becomes longer than the night, the dark time, between two peaks of the sun (noon).
Man versuchte, die lange Zeit eines Jahres durch einen Kalender mit kurzen Perioden zu unterteilen: in Monate und Wochen.	An attempt was made to divide the long period of a year into a calendar with short periods: months and weeks.
Doch Berechnungen und Beobachtungen zeigten, daß sich mit solchen Einteilungen Schwierigkeiten einstellten. Auch die Orientierung an den Mondphasen brachte keine gute Lösung. Daher waren Kalenderreformen erforderlich.	But calculations and observations showed that difficulties arose with such divisions. Orientation based on the phases of the moon did not provide a good solution either. Therefore, calendar reforms were necessary.
Eine geschah im Rom der Antike von etwa 2.000 Jahren: der julianische Kalender, der sich an dem Sonnenstand orientiert. Dabei flossen auch frühere Überlegungen aus dem Ägypten der Pharaonen ein. Seit damals ist der 1. Jänner der Beginn des Kalenderjahres.	One happened in ancient Rome about 2,000 years ago: the Julian calendar, which is based on the position of the sun. Previous considerations from the Egypt of the Pharaohs were also incorporated. Since then, January 1st has been the start of the calendar year.
Vor etwa 400 Jahren wurde eine neuerliche Reform erforderlich. Ein Erlaß des damaligen Papstes in Rom führte den  gregorianischen Kalender ein. Dieser Kalender ist bis heute allgemein gültig.	About 400 years ago another reform was necessary. A decree from the Pope at the time in Rome introduced the Gregorian calendar. This calendar is still generally valid today.
Das Sonnenjahr dauert 365 Tage mit je 24 Stunden plus einen viertel Tag (sechs Stunden). Man bleibt aber beim Kalenderjahr mit 365 ganzen Tagen.	The solar year lasts 365 days, each with 24 hours plus a quarter of a day (six hours). But you stay with the calendar year with 365 whole days.
Daher wird alle vier Jahre dem kürzesten Monat, der Februar, ein Schalttag, der 29.2., angefügt. So ein Jahr ist ein Schaltjahr, diese Jahreszahl ist ohne Rest durch vier teilbar. Das verhindert, daß im Laufe längerer Zeit wieder unerwünschte Verschiebungen des Kalenders eintreten.	Therefore, every four years, a leap day, February 29th, is added to the shortest month, February. A year like this is a leap year; this year is divisible by four without a remainder. This prevents undesirable shifts in the calendar from occurring again over a long period of time.
