In ancient times, when the valley around Innsbruck was still inhabited by giants, the giant queen Mrs Hitt lived there.

She ruled over a large empire of fertile fields and forests.

Her palace stood on the very spot where Innsbruck was later to be built down in the valley.

But she was arrogant and hard-hearted.

All her subjects feared her.

One day, as Mrs Hitt was riding through her kingdom on her horse, a beggar woman approached her with her child.

The poor woman begged the mistress to give her a piece of bread for her child.

Mrs Hitt laughed maliciously, broke a stone out of the rock and handed it to the beggar woman as bread.

The beggar woman dropped the stone to the ground and shouted in anger: "Your heart is as hard as stone, and you shall turn to stone!".

Then the sky darkened, there was lightning and thunder.

Mrs Hitt wanted to spur her horse on, but it stood still, petrified.

Her face became dark and pale, her body rough, grey and hard.

Rocks stretched out beneath her and lifted her up to the lonely heights.

When the sky cleared again, the flourishing realm of the Giant Queen had become a stony wilderness.

The beggar woman's curse had been fulfilled:

Mrs Hitt had been transformed into a grey rock figure.

With a little imagination, you can recognise a rider on a horse.

Since then, she has been enthroned as a stone memorial for all time on the Nordkette high above Innsbruck.
