Heute ist der neunte Mai. Dieser Tag ist „Europatag“. Es ist ein Tag der Erinnerung. Dieser Tag erinnert uns an ein Europa in Frieden. Und auch an ein Europa im Wohlstand. |
Today is May 9th. This day is "Europe Day". It's a day of remembering. This day reminds us of a Europe at peace. And also of a Europe in prosperity. |

Der Friede ist nicht selbstverständlich. Im vergangenen Jahrhundert
– im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert – Der erste und der zweite Weltkrieg. Viele Menschen verlieren ihr Leben. Der Krieg zerstört viele Städte und Hab und Gut der Leute. |
Peace is not a matter of course. In the last century - the twentieth century - there was twice as big a war in Europe: The first and the second world war. Many people lose their lives. The war destroys many cities and people's belongings. |

Die vielen Toten und die
extremen Zerstörungen Jetzt soll das nie wieder möglich sein. Das braucht Vertrauen und gute Verträge mit allen Staaten. |
The many people killed and the extreme destruction are a serious warning. Now this should never be possible again. That requires trust and good treaties with all states. |

Nine ten hundred and fifty one (1951) the first contract was concluded. Six states are signed it, three major and three minor: France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg ("BeNeLux"). This is the hour of birth of today's European Union. |

Verschiedene Interessen machen es nicht immer einfach. Man muß viel und lange verhandeln. Man erneuert die Verträge. Aber, der Friede bleibt, und niemand will einen Krieg. |
Different interests do not always make it easy. Poliicians have to negotiate a lot and for a long time. They renew the contracts. But peace remains, and no one wants war. |

Man baut die Städte wieder auf. Die Wirtschaft wächst, und viele Leute verdienen Geld.
Der Wohlstand für Alle wird größer. |
Cities were rebuild The economy grows, and a lot of people make money.
Prosperity for all is increasing. |

Neunzehnhundertfünfundneunzig (1995) tritt auch Österreich der EU bei. Seit Zweitausendzwei (2002) ist der Euro das Geld in neunzehn (19) Staaten der EU. Inzwischen hat die EU siebenundzwanzig (27) Staaten Europas. Der Sitz der EU ist in Brüssel, Belgien. Das Europäische Parlament arbeitet in Brüssel und in Straßburg (Frankreich). |
Nineteen hundred and ninety-five (1995) Austria also joined the EU. Since two thousand two (2002) the Euro has been the money in nineteen (19) EU countries. The EU now has twenty-seven (27) European states. The seat of the EU is in Brussels, Belgium. The European Parliament works in Brussels and in Strasbourg (France). |
